On the occasion of the IAA Mobility exhibition in Munch (Germany), Continental presented a tire concept using more than 50% of materials renewable or recycled raw materials. Baptized Conti GreenConcept, this tire automobile uses several biomaterials, one of which rubber natural from dandelions, of silicate extracts from the ash of rice husks and vegetable oils and resins.
The manufacturer claims to have used 17% recycled materials, including black from carbone, of the’steel and polyester produced from bottles of plastic. Continental indicates that more than 60 bottles are needed in PET (polyethylene terephthalate) to manufacture a set of four Conti GreenConcept tires. The tread of this tires durable is made from natural Taraxagum rubber. The Conti GreenConcept can be retreaded several times as long as the general condition of its casing allows.
In addition to the environmental benefits, the Conti GreenConcept has advantages in terms of weight (7.5 kg) since it is advertised as being 40% lighter than the tires conventional. In addition, it presents a resistance rolling 25% less than that of a tires of class A, the most efficient category in this field. For vehicles with thermal motor, this results in a decrease in emissions polluting. For electric vehicles, Continental estimates that this can provide up to 6% savings inautonomy.
ContiRe.Tex, the method of manufacturing polyester yarns from recycled PET bottles, will be gradually deployed in industrial production facilities from next year, says the manufacturer.
