The International Union for the Conservation of Nature (UICN) adopted motions on various subjects, including the protection of 80% of the Amazon rainforest and the protection of marine mammals, while the assembly of its members ends on Friday. These motions, without being binding, will set the course and the level of ambition of the strong organization of 1,400 members (States, government agencies, NGOs, indigenous peoples, business associations).

Protect at least 80% of the Amazon

The motion to protect 80% of amazonia by 2025 has been approved by 100% of the members, according to Mamadou Diallo, member of the presidency of the assembly of members, according to the live broadcast from Marseille. She asks IUCN members to “ support conservation objectives by area, with the aim of protecting, conserving and sustainably managing at least 80% of the Amazon by 2025 »In cooperation with Indigenous Peoples.

Marine mammals under surveillance

IUCN also overwhelmingly adopted a motion to “ strengthen the protection of marine mammals through regional cooperation “, Providing in particular” reinforced protection zones “and protection measures such as” seasonal closures “of fishing or” the reduction of speed ships “.

France has known for years massive strandings of dolphins on the Atlantic coast. The government has taken measures but the NGOs are asking for stronger actions such as temporary closures for fishing in the Bay of Biscay where Spanish vessels also fish, based on the recommendations of scientists.
