A supervisor was allegedly caught mining Bitcoin (BTC) and crypto in his county seat in Riverhead, New York. IT operations chief Christopher Naples, who is stated to have done this with over 40 devices in total, using thousands of dollars of illegal electricity, could stay behind bars for 15 years.
Christopher Naples, who works for a government agency in Long Island, Suffolk, reported that Christopher Naples, chief of IT operations, has been charged with public corruption, computer hacking and theft related to the covert installation of over 40 devices in government buildings.
Naples, 42, a county employee for over two decades, allegedly placed the devices in six rooms and hid them under floorboards in places like unused electrical wall panels. Officials say some of the machines have been in place since February.
Suffolk County District Attorney Timothy Sini said this was reflected in the electricity bill of at least $6,000, saying;
“Cryptocurrency mining requires a huge amount of resources and miners need to be financially capable of how to cover all these electricity and cooling costs. The suspect appears to have found a way to do this.”
Sini also says that Naples has placed over 40 devices in the building, and that several employees in the building complained of slow internet speeds, which put the district’s infrastructure at risk as well, and the temperature dropped by more than 20 degrees when the miners were removed from the room.
