To accompany the release of its sports hybrid EOS R3, Canon presented new products to install on the new accessory shoe of the camera. On the menu, a new digital microphone and a wireless transmitter.
Among other novelties, the Canon EOS R3 which has just been presented houses a new accessory shoe. Besides the traditional five contact points, it also gets a 21-pin connector. Backward compatibility with old accessories remains assured. Canon says communication with accessories will be faster and new tools will even be able to be powered directly from the case. Thus, a new “peripheral” range has been developed and brings several surprises.
Digital shotgun microphone for the EOS R3
The DM-E1D is a modern variant of the small shotgun microphone DM-E1 and takes advantage of the new brand to get rid of its analog output. No more jack cable to plug into the side of the box: the recording and modification of the signal are carried out directly by the microphone. The latter allows directional stereo recording, the choice of direction (mono barrel, 90 ° and 120 °) being made on the box. It has an anti-dust and anti-humidity seal to prevent unwanted projections from damaging the device.
New wireless transmitter
Apart from this new microphone, Canon unveiled a transmitter to coordinate external flashes, the Speedlite Transmitter ST-E10. Unlike the SLR model, it works without a battery and draws power directly from the camera. It also does not have a control monitor and relies entirely on the housing screen to manage the various synchronized flashes.
An adapter to keep the tropicalization
If the backward compatibility is present, the use of old flashes loses part of the tropicalization because of a different design. For those who wish to use their old Canon flashes on the hot shoe of the EOS R3, Canon will market an AS-E1 adapter allowing them to be mounted to retain dust and moisture protection.
Smartphone holder
Finally, Canon will market a smartphone holder that will provide a return above the device, like an external recorder. On the other hand, we have no additional precision on this point.
Pricing and availability
The DM-E1D microphone will be marketed from February 2022 at a price of 419 €. The Speedlite Transmitter ST-E10 will be available earlier, from November 2021, for 169 €. Ditto for the AS-E1 adapter which will be sold for 49 €.
