(Teleborsa) – The Vice President of the European Commission Frans Timmermans, speaking to the plenary of the European Parliament in Strasbourg, calls for the energy transition process to be accelerated and stresses that if the Green Deal was done 5 years ago “We wouldn’t be in this situation because we would be less dependent on fossil fuels and natural gas“.
“We must not be paralyzed by rising energy prices and slow down the transition, but we must accelerate to ensure that energy from renewable sources is available to all”- said Timmermans – adding that“ only one fifth of the current price increase can be attributed to the growth in the price of CO2, the rest depends on the shortcomings of the market ”.
As for the climate – he said – “I believe we can do it, we can make Cop 26 in Glasgow a success. But even more I think that we will be able to avoid the climate crisis“.
“We must prevent it from escaping our control and for the next generations we must leave a humanity that knows the limits of our planet, but we must act now” – added Timmermans – specifying that in the coming days he will meet his American, Russian, Chinese, Egyptian and to explain the European climate package. “There is a real interest in what Europe is doing, there is a continuous dialogue with the Chinese to convince them to be more ambitious”, underlined the vice president of the EU Commission.
