Together with curve of infections, the fear. In the second Christmas marked by the fight against the pandemic. Although the vaccination campaign is proceeding rather quickly in our country – fear returns, in the wake of the new variant Omicron -and an accompanying growth of infections – which literally risks ruining the parties to millions of Italians, already with the suitcase in hand. So much so that, to date, 8 million they decided to give up travel and holidays for the days of Christmas and New Year, thus choosing to stay at home.
Omicron spoilsport: 8 million Italians cancel holidays
The alarm that returns to scare the sightseeing – already severely tried by months of restrictions – comes from the end-of-year holiday bag of Demoskopika.
In detail, just over half of the Italians (52%) would have decided to go on holiday for the end of the year holidays, with 24% having already booked. Net of those who are still undecided (15%), the Italians ready to pack would be 18 million and 9 out of 10 will choose Italian destinations.
On the other side, they are 24 million the Italians who chose not to leave (48%): 12.4% of them because “even if they want to, they are still afraid to travel” and 16% (8 million) even canceled the booking after the news of the Omicron variant.
Tourism, new restrictions scare hypotheses
Likely numbers, also confirm from Fiavet. But clouds advance on the horizon: the already clear trend towards cancellation could increase if new restrictions were introduced (we just have to wait for what the control room chaired by the First Draghi, convened for December 23).
At the moment, no decision has been taken but to dictate the agenda – as for two years now – will be Omicron. And there are even those among the operators in the sector that go so far as to hypothesize that we can go further 11 million of waivers.
For those who have, however, decided to spend the holidays outside, the set most sought after remain mountain resorts or cities of art and villages of the Belpaese.
