Samsung DV80TA220 dryer test: silence, we dry!

Like that of most dryers on the market, the design of the Samsung DV80TA220TE is not original: all dressed in white, it houses a black control panel at the top right of the appliance and a large porthole, whose handle is concealed in the door.

The porthole closes on a drum able to accommodate up to 8 kg of wet laundry in its total volume of 115 l. The capacity of the drum is an essential element: the larger it is, the more it will facilitate the circulation of hot air for more efficient drying. For comparison, the drum of the Continental Edison CESL7PCW2 does not exceed 83 l, which will not be suitable for large families.

By opening the porthole to place the laundry there, we discover a double fluff filter just in the opening. It is supposed to retain the maximum amount of fluff and offer limited maintenance: it is simply necessary to extract it and open it to remove the textile fibers, then replace it in the hole provided for this purpose. Child’s play.

If desired, the user can change the door opening direction. The manufacturer has placed said opening on the left, but it is possible to change the direction according to individual needs. However, we wonder if we will have fun performing this maneuver for no good reason since it requires a little time and a little DIY experience…

To finish on this part of the device, note that it is possible to illuminate the drum of the dryer so as not to forget anything. The lighting stays on for 2 minutes after it is activated, then switches off automatically.

The LEDs are turned on via the control panel located at the top right of the device. This panel consists of a wheel around which appears each of the 14 programs offered. We greatly prefer this type of inscription in full to pictograms that are sometimes difficult to understand, as on the Candy CSO H9A2DE-S. All you have to do is turn the rotary knob to select the appropriate program.

To the right of this dial, a screen displays the duration of the selected program or the level of drying selected (on three levels). Next to this indicator, the manufacturer has placed the sensitive keys which activate/deactivate the various options offered, including the Anti-Crease mode which reduces wrinkles in the laundry when the cycle is finished by sending cold air through intermittently (up to 3 h). The user can also set up a delayed cycle stop of up to 24 hours. Two physical buttons are placed to the right of this panel: one turns the dryer on or off, the second pauses the current cycle.

The tank placed at the top left of the device tells us that it is not compulsory to connect the dryer near a water drain. Indeed, the condensed humidity extracted from the laundry will be stored in this tank. We particularly appreciate the presence of a water level indicator on the receptacle which informs the user when he must empty it. Note that the screen informs the owner with a visual and audible signal when the tank is full.

We don’t have much to say about the drying time of the Samsung DV80TA220TE. It takes an average of 29 min for the device to dry 1 kg of laundry when the Candy CSO H9A2DE-S needs 37 min for the same exercise.

The Samsung DV80TA220TE is quite good at drying laundry since we find almost no trace of humidity, with the exception – as we expected – of the “ready to iron” program. On the latter, we measure 11% humidity in the laundry, which is still less than the expected 12%. We expect a very specific percentage of humidity, because this mode is supposed to facilitate ironing thanks to textile fibers that are not quite dry.

On the “cupboard-ready” mode or the “extra-dry cotton” program, our laundry came out completely dry, with no trace of humidity. Note that the DV80TA220TE does not offer a “ready to put away” program as such. We therefore used the drying intensity on level 2 of the Cottons programme, corresponding to an alternative mode to “cupboard dry”.

Finally, at 80% of its maximum load, the Samsung DV80TA220TE takes 30 min to dry 1 kg of laundry, in the average of our comparison. The Continental Edison CESL7PCW2 is the slowest since with this same load it took 32 min/kg.

The Samsung DV80TA220TE has an energy class A +++, supposed to guarantee controlled electricity consumption since it works with a heat pump. This technology is intended to consume less energy than the resistance heaters of entry-level dryers. Our measurements fully confirm these data, the DV80TA220TE being very economical.

Indeed, it consumes an average of 0.949 kWh/kg. If we stick to four cycles per week, the user will have to add €30.60 to his annual electricity bill. It is therefore one of the most economical devices in our comparison. It is also another Samsung, the DV90T6240LH, which wins the prize for the least energy-consuming dryer, because over the year, it only consumes 163 kWh/kg, which corresponds to a cost of 25 €. The most energy-intensive is none other than the Continental Edison CESL7PCW2 (him again) which will cost its owner €48/year.
