Oled Evo and Oled EX technologies are different. The first is in fact used exclusively by LG Electronics while the second is promoted by LG Display – the manufacturer of Oled panels – for all other television vendors. Explanations.
At CES 2022, LG Display – LG’s subsidiary dedicated to the manufacture of LCD and Oled panels – unveiled its new Oled EX panel (for Evolution and eXperience) which combines the use of deuterium and a new algorithm allowing very fine management the energy of the 33 million OLED pixels (for an 8K panel). LG Display thus announces a gain in brightness of up to 30% compared to a conventional OLED panel.
This technology will not be used with the Oled EX nomenclature by LG Electronics, which retains the name LG Oled Evo for its brighter panels without making a distinction. LG thus specifies that LG Oled Evo technology is the combination of the α9 Gen5 AI processor and its own image management algorithms. The manufacturer also explains that the LG Oled C2 and G2 televisions are part of the Oled Evo series exploiting the new algorithms and the α9 Gen5 processor. You have to dig into the features to read that the G2 uses Brightness Booster Max technology providing up to 30% more brightness than a standard Oled TV, while the LG C2 is content with Brightness Booster for 20% more brightness. If the two models indeed use the same panel and the same algorithms, the LG G2 has a cooling system placed behind the OLED panel which allows it to display greater brightness.
In fact, most high-end Oled 2022 televisions are now equipped with new Oled EX panels, known under the code name of WBE, using deuterium to improve their lifespan. Some models, such as the LG 48C2, remain equipped with WBC panels until the stocks of Oled 48-inch WBC panels are sold out or LG’s A2 and B2 series, which are less expensive. In general, when the brightness gain is not specified, it means that it is a WBC slab without deuterium. For the others, the gain in luminosity therefore depends on the algorithms used, but above all on the presence or not of a cooling system. It is the latter that manages to make the difference.
