Nikon is expanding its Z-mount optical fleet with the Nikkor Z 400m f/4.5 VR S, a bright, long fixed focal length of reasonable size.
A focal point for sports and wildlife
The Z-mount optical fleet for Nikon’s APS-C and 24×36 hybrids has become substantial and the Japanese firm is adding a new reference to it with the Nikkor Z 400m f/4.5 VR S, a fixed focal length intended more for sports photography and animal, but which has the advantage of being rather small in size.
A long TV with a contained size
This telephoto lens is about 23 cm long (10 cm in diameter) for 1.26 kg, which for a 400 mm with a still fairly bright aperture is quite contained. For comparison, the Nikkor Z 400mm F/2.8 TC VR S, admittedly brighter, yet noticeably lighter than the reflex version, still weighs 3 kg on the scale. Another comparable lens, the AF-S Nikkor 500mm f/5.6E PF ED VR for SLR approaches 1.5 kg – for an equivalent length.
This lens is compatible with the brand’s 1.4x and 2x teleconverters.
Well equipped
It features an optical construction of 19 elements divided into 13 groups. Closest focusing distance is 2.5m and reproduction ratio is 0.16x. The diaphragm has 9 blades and the diameter of the filter holder is 95 mm. The optics are also well endowed in control, with a switch between autofocus and manual focus, a focus limiter, several customizable buttons and a configurable ring.
stabilized
This 400 mm is also equipped with optical stabilization (5.5 stops) guaranteeing up to 6 stops of gain when coupled with the mechanical stabilization of the Nikon Z9. The lens is also weatherproof. For videographers, Nikon highlights the video qualities of its telephoto lens, including silent focusing and a focus-breathing which would be deleted.
Price and availability
The Nikkor Z 400m f/4.5 VR S will be available from July 14, 2022 at a price of €3,699. As a reminder, the Nikkor Z 400mm f/2.8 TC VR S is displayed at €14,999.
