Renault has decided to celebrate the half-century of the R5 by creating a boosted electric version of the R5 Turbo 2 that will appeal to nostalgics as well as video game fans.
While the Paris Motor Show (October 17-23) will be the opportunity to discover the electric Renault 4L project for the first time, the diamond brand will also take the opportunity to honor another of its legendary models.
On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Renault 5, the manufacturer has just unveiled the Renault R5 Turbo 3E. A “show car” that pays homage to the R5 Turbo 2 from which it borrows the extra-wide rear fenders by adding an oversized spoiler and diffuser. A machine that looks like it came straight out of the world of video games and the 80s from which it knowingly borrows several codes.
The R5 Turbo 3E is equipped with a 42 kWh battery and two electric motors housed in the rear roads which develop 380 horsepower for 700 Nm of torque. Renault announces a 0 to 100 km / h in 3.5 seconds, 200 km / h in top speed as well as a drift mode which modifies the steering angle to more than 50 degrees to take all the turns in slips. Recharging would only take two hours on a 380V/32A charger.
The R5 Turbo 3E will appear in video games
Inside, Renault has also made a nostalgic nod by replacing the ten dials on the dashboard with ten screens that show the main functions of the car using terms from the video game: the “free play” button is used to start, the “turbo” mode allows you to drift, the “donut” mode is used to do 360°…
The R5 Turbo 3E probably has no commercial future, even if many enthusiasts would no doubt be ready to take out their checkbook. Renault evokes a ” dual digital ” who ” will evolve in universes of virtual games from the “Web3 “. The real version will be exhibited on the Renault stand at the Paris Motor Show (October 17-23).
