Following the lack of agreement between the domestic employers’ associations and the trade unions regarding the revaluation of wages, increases in the wages of domestic helpers, caregivers and babysitters have taken place.
They come into effect in January the adjustments in an amount equal to 80% the changes in the cost of living recorded by Istat as at 30 November 2022 for the contractual minimum wages, and to an extent equal to 100% for the conventional values of board and lodging.
It could cost up to 1,384 euros per month to have a carer trained as a super D level cohabitant (for a non self-sufficient person) in addition to 194 euros in allowance and the additional monthly salary such as thirteenth and severance pay.
Maids and caregivers, all increases in the ministry tables
The changes start from 1 January 2023 as well as the contributions which according to the Assindatcolf should grow by around 8%.
The table with the updated wage amounts for the Domestic Work CCNL shows the following minimum wages for cohabiting workers, in some cases with the additional allowance:
- level A (generic cohabitant family assistant, for example cleaner only) – 725,19 euro;
- AS level – 857,06 euro;
- level B – 922,98 euro;
- BS level (babysitter or carer for self-sufficient people) – 988,90 euro;
- level C (assistant with specific background knowledge, e.g. a cook) – 1.054,85 euro;
- CS level – 1.120,76 euro;
- level D – 1.318,54 europlus indemnity 194.98 euros;
- DS level – 1.384,46 europlus indemnity 194.98 euros.
The complete table with the minimum contractual wages is on the website of the Ministry of Labour.
Housekeepers and carers increases, costs for families
To the monthly salary increases, the following must also be added:
- contributions (Inps, Cassa Maid)
- rateo Tfr
- thirteenth
- vacation.
In the case of non self-sufficient people, however, families will have to plan much higher expenses because in addition to the salary for the caregiver and contributions, they will also have to consider replacements on days off and on holidays as well as night assistance.
According to Assindatcolf’s calculations, the costs for families could increase from 1,300 euros a year up to almost 2 thousand euros a month.
According to the Assindatcolf, for the most trained and qualified professional figure in the sector, the family could spend up to almost 2,000 euros a month without considering replacements. However, they let it be known from the Association that most of the contracts for carers concern the CS levels or those for assistants who look after non-self-sufficient people without having the qualifications for a monthly total including contributions that exceeds 1,500 euros.
