111,939 new passenger cars were registered in France in January 2023 compared to 102,899 in January 2022, an increase of 9%, according to data published on Wednesday February 1 by the Automotive Platform and AAA Data.
On the motorization side, if the diesel continues its descent into hell, the gasoline models record a growth of 12%, while the electric ones continue to grow inexorably, pushed by the ecological bonus revised upwards on January 1, 2023. “From an amount of €6,000 in 2022, the latter now amounts to €7,000 for models whose price does not exceed €47,000 and for natural persons whose reference tax income is less than or equal to €14,089, and €5,000 for other natural persons”, specifies AAA Data. Electric vehicles represent 13.1% of the new passenger car market in January 2023, with 14,626 registrations compared to 10% in January 2022.
This trend is confirmed by the annual report drawn up by the Association of European Manufacturers (ACEA). Sales of electric cars recorded a new market share record in the European Union in 2022. They represent 12.1% of new car sales over the year, compared to 9.1% in 2021 or 1.9% in 2019.
If we look at the details of electric car sales for the first month of 2023, the top 10 presents a few surprises. The first is the consecration of the Dacia Spring, since the low-cost model occupies first place on the podium, ahead of the Fiat 500 and the Renault Megane-E. The Dacia otherwise ranks 13th in the top 100 best-selling models, all engines combined.
The Peugeot e-208, which has long occupied the first position (cumulative and monthly), finds itself in this first month of the year in fourth place, which can be seen as a poor performance for the electric model. the most sold in France in 2022.
The second surprise is the arrival in fifth place of the MG4, the sedan of the Chinese brand which continues to amaze with its good value for money. The third astonishment is finally based on the absence of the Tesla Model 3 from the top 10, despite the price reduction decided by Tesla, which still places the Model Y in ninth position. Of course, these trends are based on a single month of sales and will need to be confirmed over time.
