Released almost two years ago, the WF-1000XM4 are Sony’s most capable wireless headphones. Their successors, the WF-1000XM5, should soon appear. Documents leaked from the Federal Communications Commission, the American agency in charge of telecoms, seem to indicate this in any case.
Among the best true wireless in our comparison, the WF-1000XM4 have few flaws. However, some users complain that the design is a little too big and bulky. A quick look at images of future WF-1000XM5s shows us a smaller footprint, which could improve the feeling of comfort. The case also seems to have benefited from this slimming treatment, while retaining its matte coating.
In addition, this box allows an electrical output of 5 V and 230 mA against 5 V and 140 mA on the previous model, which suggests faster charging of the headphones. In addition, the headphones, which previously used a three-pin interface, are moving to two pins for charging and communication. Finally, the information LED seems to migrate from the interior to the exterior front face of the new casing.
As for availability, we don’t have an official release date yet. However, the WF-1000XM4 had appeared in June 2021. We can therefore legitimately expect an official announcement in the coming weeks, for a launch before summer 2023.
