Free FR Alert does not send emergency messages, subscribers forget during floods.

The FR-alert system, to be implemented in 2022, is designed to warn the population of threats directly on their smartphones. Except there’s been a major glitch: Free subscribers didn’t receive the alert, or received it too late.

Free subscribers did not receive the alert message.

One of our digital editors and his colleagues, subscribers to FreeMobile, were able to observe the same issue in yesterday’s Guardian. Being far from Avignon, where the flood of the Rhône had been announced, he received no warning. However, his mother, a Bouygues Telecom customer, received an informative message.

As a reminder, Météo France has placed several departments on orange alert and six on red alert, the highest alert level. In the Ardèche, the situation is very alarming with blocked roads, evacuations and interventions by firefighters. Agnès Pannier-Runacher, Minister of Climate Change, described the incident as follows: “Never seen before in living memory”.

A message sent to residents’ smartphones by FR-Alert asked them to return home before 6pm and to turn off water, gas and electricity for safety. Bouygues Telecom, SFR and Orange customers received this alert, unlike free mobile customers.

Why doesn’t FR-Alert work with Free?

This is not the first time that the operator has faced problems with the FR-alert system. Last January, during the tsunami warning test, free users did not receive this message. The exact cause of this error is still unknown, but hypotheses point to issues with the SIBs (System Information Blocks) or software incompatibility on the Frey’s antenna.

Free and the authorities should address this problem immediately because in emergency situations, fast and reliable reception of alerts can make a difference and save lives. Obviously, in case of severe weather events, we should continue to get information through traditional media and official social networks of competent authorities.
