Google is testing an expected feature addition to Google Wallet.

In September, Google announced the launch of a beta feature in Wallet to create a digital identity document using a passport for use at US airports. So far, Google Wallet has primarily allowed you to carry various important documents, such as bank cards, train or plane tickets or loyalty cards. In France, official documents are allowed, but not considered valid by the authorities. Here’s how they can work: In the US, it’s already possible to integrate your digital ID card or driver’s license, and use it normally. And recently, passport has joined the list of documents that can be integrated into Google Wallet.

Passport integration with Google Wallet is possible today.

As of Thursday, October 17, Google has begun testing functionality with US Passport. To take advantage of the function, you need to be registered with the Google Play Services Beta program, which specifically means having a version higher than Android 9. Also note that this only works for US domestic flights: so it’s not possible. For them currently can take international flight with this method.

To add a passport to Google Wallet, simply click “Add to Wallet”, then select the “US Passport (Beta)” function. However, the integration of the passport with the wallet requires special care: it will be necessary to place your passport on a smooth surface, then remove the shell of your smartphone and scan the document to avoid interference. Then you have to try to find the chip on the back of the passport so that it can be scanned. After this step is completed, you will need to send a quick video of the user’s face to verify their identity. At the moment, nothing indicates when such functionality will be available from us, but for now, it will be necessary to support the identity of France.
