What if Apple Vision Pro stops production next month? After all, that’s what Media The Information says. More specifically, according to its sources, Apple has significantly reduced production volumes since the start of the summer, with a complete shutdown likely before the end of the year.
Vision Pro: Simple failure or attempt to produce the first sequel?
It’s enough to imagine that Apple has enough stock to ensure the (low) demand and focus on something else. Yet according to The Information, the Apple firm will have enough components to produce 600,000 additional headsets. Luxair, the subcontractor in charge of assembly, is currently making 1,000 helmets a day, half of what it was before. Apple has also requested to cease operations until November.
It must be said that the Vision Pro has only received 370,000 buyers since its launch in early 2024, while Apple does not expect to sell more than 50,000 buyers by the end of this year. Sales got off to a brisk start, before falling sharply. An estimated 200,000 helmets are still in stock. Between this stock and yet-to-be-produced headsets, there will be plenty to satisfy future buyers while waiting for Apple to come up with something else.
Apple ready to continue in the headset?
A more affordable version is regularly rumored. The suggested price is $2000, which is half of the Vision Pro’s starting price. It’s still not enough to compete with cheaper virtual reality headsets like the MetaQuest 3S, but the products aren’t really in the same category, after all. This new headset should notably have a less premium finish, lower resolution and a few less technologies. Another possibility would be that Apple will put an improved version of the Vision Pro into production sometime next year.
So an answer in a few months, while it also remains to be seen whether Microsoft will try to respond to Apple, who may then adapt. Despite the HoloLens 2 failure, rumors in the corridors are indeed reporting a new headset from the Redmond firm.
