Will the upcoming Cévennes episode be more dangerous than expected?

After the historic floods that affected Ardèche, Rhône and Alpes-Maritimes a week ago, new bad weather is starting this Thursday in several Mediterranean departments.

The episodes of the Cévennes follow each other, but fortunately, they are not the same! This weekend’s episode will be much less intense than the last one, but quite long: about 4 days!

This Thursday afternoon, storms have started to develop in Garde, Upper Languedoc, Southern Provence and Corsica. Some showers may be heavy as early as today, but the two days with the highest risk will be Friday and Saturday. On Friday afternoon, new storms will develop along almost the entire Mediterranean coast: Herault, Garde, War, Alpes-Maritimes and Corsica. Storms will turn violent in the Cévennes and last throughout the week, which could see the heaviest rain.

Extreme caution on Friday and Saturday

Accumulations of rain will become noticeable by Saturday evening:

  • 100 to 150 m in the Cévennes, with the possibility of locally reaching 200 mm.
  • 30 to 100 mm in other departments bordering the Mediterranean Sea, especially the Alps-Maritimes.

Even if last-minute breakdowns are never impossible, few will be more significant than rain accumulations. StormStorm Leslie which dumped 600 to 800 mm last week. But not all of this water has yet been drained or absorbed by the soil and the flow rate of waterways is very high. Therefore, it is likely that some towns affected by floods a few days ago will have new overflows.
