It probably hasn’t escaped your notice if you use these streaming platforms, but for several months, Netflix and then Disney+ introduced account sharing. has tightened up the complications significantly. Unless you actually live under the same roof or are willing to pay a few euros more per month with your membership, no longer with anyone. Sharing access to your account is difficult. And that doesn’t make Brazil happy.
A law that can spread.
Legislative proposals are being considered in the country with a clear objective of reducing piracy and making life easier for consumers.Prohibit on-demand content providers from charging extra or blocking access to shared accounts at locations other than the user’s home.“
To explain this desire, the proposal specifically states:Charging extra for access to an address other than the residential address is an abuse that restricts the use of services by users. is, especially in the case of families whose members live in different states or towns, long-distance marriages, people traveling frequently“
Rainer Grigolo, director of Procon RS (the official consumer protection agency) added: “If a streaming service contract allows for two simultaneous screens, for example, it is not up to the provider to specify the degree of kinship, relationship and residential address. In fact, the contract is not tied to an address as is the case with cable television.“
MPA raised his head and said.
But before we see these laws take effect and, why not, encourage other countries to do the same, many hurdles remain. None other than MPA (Motion Picture Association) among them. This body, which represents the interests of the main Hollywood studios (Paramount Pictures, Sony Pictures, Warner Bros…) as well as Netflix and Disney, is surprisingly not too enthusiastic about this approach.
While the MPA welcomes Brazil’s efforts in its fight against piracy, it says there is still room for improvement, such as the implementation of site blocking. She also sees the law against account sharing as a threat. The reason for this is:The MPA opposes these restrictions because they would not only affect suppliers’ income and freedom of contract in general, but would also weaken copyright enforcement.“It’s just hard to say that this would be a significant loss of revenue for its customers.
It remains to be seen what the next steps will be in this matter and what the MPA and related services can do.
