Soon, WhatsApp will allow you to verify the authenticity of photos you receive. It must be said that misinformation from generators like Dall-E or Midjourney is spreading at a rapid pace. The new feature was spotted in beta version 2.24.23.13 of the Android application and integrates Google’s reverse image search into messaging.
Checking images with Google.
The feature is easy to use. Just open the image in a WhatsApp conversation, access the menu with three vertical dots and select the option to search online. Its purpose is to allow faster access to verification in the face of online misinformation.
However, this functionality has limitations. The first is ergonomic because its positioning in the sub-menu reduces the intuitiveness of authentication. And the consistency of results isn’t always perfect.
However, WhatsApp clarifies that the analyzed images are analyzed with Google, and not the application itself that authenticates.
End-to-end encryption remains secure, messaging stays true to its privacy policy while Brussels wants to analyze images to fight child crime.
For now, this feature is available as a test for Android beta users. The deployment will be soon but nothing has been announced for WhatsApp on iOS.
