Three years ago, in 2021, LG said goodbye to the phone market. But a return is possible according to a patent filed with the USPTO in June 2024, then validated in October. LG patent reveals advanced technology.

The 14-page document describes a high-stiffness support structure with an opening pattern in the foldable area and various adhesive layers on multiple curing surfaces to improve foldability and reduce display defects. . The device aims to solve some of the problems in the field of foldable screens, particularly problems with Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip range.

In its patent, LG clarifies, to justify the interest of a robust folding solution, that “Consumers who watch or play games on a portable device prefer a larger screen. However, making the screen larger hinders portability.”.

The patent application comes after LG presented a defective screen. But another patent also surfaced, showing a smartphone with a rollable panel that was left behind when the mobile division was shut down. The timing is also interesting as we know that Samsung has also filed a document showing a model capable of folding into three.

Note that if LG exits the telephone market in 2021, it would have to focus its activities on other areas: electric vehicle components, IoT, connected homes, robotics and artificial intelligence. The Korean company’s patent would be the first sign of a re-evaluation of its strategy for a comeback with a smartphone with a flexible screen.
