Anti-noise radars are coming: Are you on the lookout for new state restrictions?

Anti-noise radar to be tested in five French cities in 2025 They will be able to detect and fix vehicles with too much noise, with a limit of 85 decibels set for a fine of 135 euros. After the first phase of testing in 2022, these devices, equipped with microphones and cameras, could be deployed nationally if their effectiveness is proven after this pilot phase.

In 2025, a new type of radar will be deployed to identify and fix the noisiest vehicles (two, three or four-wheelers). After the first trial phase two years ago, this type of radar will be deployed first in a few cities, then, if proven effective, across the country.

Noise pollution puts stress on trees.

It is mainly under the leadership of the Bruitparif organization, which specializes in the study and monitoring of noise in the Île-de-France, that in 2022 different models of anti-noise radar were tested. It was then launched in seven pilot communities, including Paris, Nice and Toulouse. This was a testing phase with no violations or penalties, but all data collected by these radars was obviously carefully analyzed.

No more decibels bursting your eardrums!

Since then, two manufacturers have managed to get their device approved by the National Meteorology and Testing Laboratory (LNE), knowing that the radar, HydraHydraMust be equipped with eight microphones and two cameras. The microphones are responsible for calculating the different levels of ambient sound as well as the angles of origin of the noise while the cameras identify and photograph the license plates of potential criminals. In theory, HYDRA can detect excessively noisy vehicles in an area of about 15 meters on either side of the radar.

For Class IV fines, the threshold is set at 85 dB.

A second phase of the experiment, this time with an oral version, will begin in spring 2025 at just five sites, including Paris. A limit of 85 decibels was retained for a penalty of 4.e The class gives rise to a fixed penalty of 135 euros (reduced to 90 euros if paid within 15 days). While owners of large cars may be concerned, those who drive electric cars needn’t be.

At the end of this new phase, which should extend to the end of 2025, an assessment will be made by the Ministry of Environmental Transition on whether or not it is interested in deploying in-sound radars more widely across France. Note that sound radar prototypes have also been tested elsewhere in Europe, notably in Berlin, Geneva, Brussels and Barcelona.
