BYD, which is vying for the title of world’s leading electric car maker alongside Tesla, has carved a niche for itself in the market thanks to aggressively priced models. However, BYD’s arrival in Europe has not been as felt as it might have been, with prices here ultimately not being as competitive, especially compared to other Chinese manufacturers. BYD is now trying to rectify the situation in a difficult context, where electric cars made in China face reparations for customs duties at the European level and have been stripped of environmental bonuses in France. .
The Sealion 7, the latest model launched in Europe by BYD, is an electric SUV rival to the Tesla Model Y. Launched in France for €46,990, a higher price than its main rival, it seems to be underequipped to find a niche. The market is such a competitive segment. Just a few weeks after its launch, BYD has already decided to discount its Sealion 7, which is now priced from €42,990 through a special edition called 30 years. The latter party celebrates the anniversary of BYD, which debuted in the automobile industry in 2003 with the success it is known for. The Sealion 7 30 Years is based on the entry-level Comfort finish and is only available with the Atlantis Gray shade, between Gray and Blue.
Substantial discount?
The offer, valid until December 31, 2024, allows the Chinese SUV to reduce its prices by up to €4,000. For comparison, a Tesla Model Y Propulsion sells in France from €44,990 plus bonuses. This state aid, which does not benefit the Sealion 7, keeps the two models at the same price for the two richest deciles, who are only entitled to a €2,000 bonus. For others, the subsidy could amount to €3,000 or €4,000, thus placing the Model Y at a lower price than the Sealion 7.
At this price, the BYD SUV offers 483 km of autonomy and already quite comprehensive equipment. However, the competition is fierce. Besides the Tesla Model Y, Toyota sells its bZ4X from €34,900, MG has the Marvel R in stock at €34,490 and Leapmotor offers its C10 for €34,900 through an introductory offer.
