With the release of its first Scribe in 2022, Amazon was looking to break into the big-screen e-reader segment. This concept seems to be validated as the brand introduced a revised and improved version of the product a few weeks ago, which is seriously called Scribe 2024.
It’s still a hybrid device that combines a large-format e-reader and a digital notebook. The whole thing retains the solid underpinnings of the previous model, while adding some improvements. The electronic ink screen doesn’t really change, showing the same features with a 10.2-inch diagonal for a density of 300 ppi. However, Amazon has promised that the rendering of this display has been improved. However, it does not accept a color call unlike other recent e-readers, such as the Kobo Libra Color, Book Note Air4c or Kindle Color Soft.
In terms of features, the Kindle Scribe 2024 comes with the new Premium Pen, which has a built-in eraser and customizable buttons. The device also offers several storage capacities (16 GB, 32 GB or 64 GB). Finally, the brand claims that its e-reader can last up to 12 weeks in reading mode and about three weeks in note-taking with 30 minutes of daily use. Surprisingly, listening to audiobooks is not possible in the absence of Bluetooth or speaker connectivity.
Note that at the time of writing this test, some promising features associated with artificial intelligence, such as automatic summarization, character recognition or improvement of handwritten notes, are not yet available in France.
At launch, the 16 GB version of the Kindle Scribe 2024 costs €430. The 32 GB and 64 GB models cost €450 and €480 respectively. The e-reader is also available in two colors: “Tungsten Gray” or “Metallic Green”.
construction
From the start, the Kindle Scribe 2024 stands out with a very high-end design, nothing to envy to the best tablets. It must be said that the shell of the device is mainly made of the best quality aluminum, which gives the whole thing a lot of character. We’re a far cry from the all-plastic design of the majority of e-readers.
Moreover, its dimensions are almost identical to the first Scribe, i.e. only 5.7 mm thick and 433 g in weight, making it quite light and easy to handle, even for long read/write sessions. too Of course, unlike smaller e-readers, you won’t be able to use it at arm’s length, but you get the preferred position instantly. In any case, it’s an inevitable compromise in terms of screen size. The display fits perfectly into this sleek design. It is completely flush, which not only contributes to the overall aesthetics but also makes it easy to clean. Good to know, this Kindle Scribe 2024 is compatible with previous model cases and accessories.
And if the dimensions don’t change compared to the latter, the design has been slightly revised with white borders around the screen now. A welcome aesthetic choice, which accentuates the “sheet of paper” effect. A new metallic green color is also available, which is tired of the dark tones, bringing a little extra touch of freshness to the range.
We also pay good attention to detail, as the metal back is protected by four discreet, but very practical, knobs that prevent scratches when the device is placed on a flat surface. They also prevent the assembly from slipping when used on a surface that is too smooth.
We also particularly appreciate the presence of the rim, which allows you to hold the device securely without the risk of unnecessary pressure on the screen. It will suit both right-handed and left-handed users as the e-reader has an accelerometer. However, it does not allow you to change the display to landscape mode and is only used to change the orientation to 180°.
Finally, the new premium pen stylus – included with all models – has benefited from special attention. It is magnetic, which allows it to be left on the e-reader. The attachment is quite strong, but it will not resist the slightest sudden movement. So it is better to store it in a different way to ensure that it is not lost.
We really enjoyed using this stylus, which has an integrated rubber eraser and a customizable button. It further enhances the writing experience and provides a better balance and natural feel while using it. The illusion of writing with a real pen is real.
Screen
The Kindle Scribe 2024 e-ink screen is the same as the previous model. So it’s still a 10.2-inch touchscreen display that offers 300 pixels per inch density. However, it has not aged well, as confirmed by our laboratory measurements.
Thus, it stands out with a maximum brightness of 121,074 cd/m². Contrast reaches a respectable 16.3:1 ratio. So a decent score, but significantly lower than the Kindle Paperwhite 2024 which displays 22.89:1, probably because there’s an extra tactile layer dedicated to the stylus.
Finally, the reflection rate is excellent, measured at 26.8%, the best among e-readers that have passed through our lab. Combined with the large screen size, these results guarantee perfect reading comfort both indoors and outdoors.
The set is complemented by relevant comfort options such as adjustable brightness, a very useful dark mode for those who like to read in the dark and the possibility to adjust the color temperature. Amazon also claims that the display also offers a more pleasant writing experience thanks to a slightly grainy surface, which is believed to mimic the texture of paper. In use, writing on the Kindle Scribe 2024 is a real joy.
Despite these undeniable advantages, the screen is limited to a black and white display. If this feature is perfect for advice books or manga, it limits everything else. As we’ve already explained to you in our test of the Kobo Clara Color, Vivlio Light HD Color or Kobo Libra Color, color isn’t necessary on screens 7 inches or smaller. On the other hand, the Boox Note Air4 C, recently tested in our columns, proves that even a 10-inch diagonal allows you to enjoy comics and comic books.
User experience
Kindle Scribe 2024’s interface incorporates the proven foundations of other Kindle e-readers, while integrating features specific to note-taking and annotation. The home screen remains simple and uncluttered, highlighting recently opened content and recommendations from the Kindle library. The menu is accessed via a discrete bar at the bottom of the interface, which allows quick navigation between books, notebooks and settings. Overall response to the e-reader is very good.
But beyond its larger screen, the main point of difference of the Scribe range from other Kindles is clearly the possibility to take notes with a stylus. Amazon continues to perfect that note-taking experience here. The integration of the new premium pen stylus, now standard on all models, is a clear improvement. This ergonomic stylus, with an integrated eraser and customizable buttons, offers a natural and fluid writing feel. It not only allows you to take handwritten notes but also allows you to draw or highlight with precision using different tools like pen, quill or pencil.

Kindle Scribe 204 Stylus Functions
One of the key new features is Active Canvas functionality, which allows you to annotate e-books directly. This works for people bought on Amazon and for people you upload yourself, as well as PDFs or Word documents, which obviously increases the possibilities of use.
When an annotation is added, an adjust box opens around it and automatically rearranges the surrounding text to maintain a consistent layout. This approach makes annotations more readable and integrated into the content, while ensuring that they remain anchored even if the document layout is modified (for example, font size or by changing the style). However, some limitations associated with Amazon’s closed ecosystem remain. For example, it is not possible to directly annotate DRM-protected e-books purchased from the Kindle Store. For these specific materials, only annotations can be added in “sticky note” form.
On the notebook side, Kindle Scribe 2024 still offers 18 models (lines, grids, musical scores, etc.), but now allows you to use different models in the same notebook. A new lasso tool has also been added to easily move drawings or annotations across the page. However, we regret not being able to generate handwritten text conversions directly from the e-reader. As it stands, you have to send your production via email and the changes are made on remote servers. What’s more, fairly accurately.
Some users may also regret that note-taking isn’t as comprehensive as competing tools like ReMarkable or Boox, which offer more flexibility in managing files and annotations. That being said, the first mentioned aren’t really e-readers while the others are certainly more complete, but are more complicated to understand due to working under Android.
But the real big downside in our opinion is the absence of new AI tools, summarization and refinement. However, they look very promising. However, as Amazon clearly states on the product page, “The AI note-taking tools, Summary and Refine, are supported for the English language and are only available in the United States.” This limits the device’s ability to automate certain tasks such as cleaning up handwriting or converting and summarizing handwritten notes.
