Windows 10 refused to give way to Windows 11.
After months of very modest growth, specialist site Statcounter revealed a decline in Windows 11’s market share last November. A drop so many months after the initial release was already not a good sign. But, instead of stopping in December, it continued, allowing Windows 10 to maintain its big lead.
In detail, Windows 11 lost 0.84 points from November to December 2024, falling to 34.1 percent market share. The transition is to Windows 10 (+0.9 points), which now dominates at 62.73 percent. To simplify, out of two PCs equipped with Windows, two still use Windows 10, an OS that dates back to 2015, and one uses Windows 11 (2021).
It remains to be seen how these figures will evolve in October 2025. Note that this date will no longer be supported by Windows 10. Enough to encourage users who might eventually migrate to the unpopular Windows 11, provided they respect Microsoft’s hardware restrictions.
Browsers: Microsoft Edge and Google Chrome still dominate.
At the same time, Statcounter also revealed its browser statistics. We’ll be the first to note that despite numerous incentives to use another solution, and despite the bad publicity regularly devoted to it, Google Chrome isn’t being blocked in the first place. The latter largely dominates with 66.88% market share (+0.5 points in December 2024).
Behind, Microsoft Edge is second with 13.21% (+0.34 points). The Redmond firm can certainly thank its users for their methods for imposing their solution on their Windows 11 PCs against their will. Finally, Apple Safari trailed at 8.49% (-0.64 points), Mozilla Firefox at 6.14% (-0.3 points) and Opera at 2.74% (-0.07 points). 2024 will definitely not be the year of browser pluralism. Perhaps the situation will change with the resale of Chrome and the arrival of several alternative search solutions in 2025.
