Less than a year after going on sale, appleapple Production of the Vision Pro, its virtual reality headset, or in its own marketing terms its “space computer” would have been halted. It follows a much lower demand than expected, mainly due to the lack of materials, but above all its very high price, 3,499 dollars in the United States, and 3,999 euros in France.
Apple reportedly asked the headset’s assembler, a Chinese company called Luxshare, to stop production in November. The firm had already cut that in half, and was now making only 1,000 units per day. Various suppliers may have produced enough components for a total of 500,000 to 600,000 headsets, a very low number given that Apple originally expected to sell 8 million headsets.
An affordable headset and an updated Vision Pro
The firm may have postponed production of the second-generation Vision Pro to focus on less expensive helmets. Apple has reportedly asked suppliers to provide enough stock to assemble four million copies of this more accessible headset, or just half of initial forecasts for the Vision Pro.
However, this may not be the end of the story for the Vision Pro. Although production has stopped, the production lines have not yet been dismantled, leaving Apple with the opportunity to restart them. Additionally, according to Kuo and Mark Gurman, two of the most reliable sources on Apple rumors, the firm is planning an updated version of the Vision Pro later in the year.
