At CES in Las Vegas, manufacturer Hisense made waves with its new 116-inch UX116 television. Not only because of the impressive size of these TVs (the largest in the world at the moment), but also because they benefit from a new Mini-Led backlighting technology called RGB Local Dimming.

To summarize it simply, instead of using a white backlight and applying a filter to reproduce the colors seen on the screen, the RGB Mini-Led consists of directly colored LEDs. This technology has several advantages: better coverage of color spaces, potentially higher peak luminance, less exposure and better reproduction of black colors on the screen.

TCL also showed off a television equipped with RGB Mini-Led technology at its stand at CES, but it remains a concept at this point. The Chinese manufacturer may in any case market such models by the end of the year or in 2026.

RGB microlead, what is this scam?

At Samsung, we were also able to see a television in prototype form and the approach is similar, but with smaller-than-usual LED panels, thanks to the manufacturer’s RGB microtechnology. does That famous microlead we’ve been telling you about for years? A futuristic technology that promises exceptional image quality, but still costs €800 to €1000 per inch? Well no, since the name RGB Micro-Led suggested by Samsung refers to a panel backlight in Mini-Led style, so LCD! As a reminder, a “real” microLED consists of self-contained sub-pixels and provides infinite contrasts.

However, RGB Micro-Led or RGB Mini-Led technology remains interesting, but this literal twist clearly risks confusing everyone and harming consumers. Samsung isn’t in its first attempt to stand out from the competition with its share of confusion. We see that many users still confuse Qled and Oled for example, even though the two technologies have absolutely nothing to do with each other…

The term RGB Micro-Led doesn’t seem definitive at the moment, and so we hope the manufacturer chooses a more appropriate expression. See you in a few months to find out more!
