With Polaroid, the story really seems like an eternal restart. After much procrastination, the company has returned to its old name, and now regularly offers new devices, not always original. Thus, after a OneStep2 came a OneStep + with a connection to a smartphone via Bluetooth.
A mix between film and digital
Likewise, two years later, after the Now of 2020, a relatively simple device in its approach, comes the Now +. It uses the same aesthetic codes and also recovers a Bluetooth connection. In the meantime Polaroid has tried an atypical experiment with the Go, this device inspired by the Now which fits in a pocket.
A Now clone with OneStep + functions
Coming back to Now +, we note that in absolute terms, little has really changed since OneStep +. The general ergonomics have been simplified, but this is the only real evolution. Thus, the Now + comes to replace the OneStep +, as the Now had replaced the OneStep2 in its time.
In addition to the remains of the OneStep + which could be found opposite the Now +, its main competitor could be the Fujifilm Instax LiPlay. Marketed at around € 160, it offers wireless features quite similar to those of Now +.
Pricing and availability
Marketed since August 31, 2021 for 149 €, the Polaroid Now + is only available, at the time of this publication, on the Polaroid website.
At first glance, the external differences between the Polaroid Now + and its predecessor the Now are not obvious. But on scrutiny, we can find four, some more anecdotal than others. To begin with, the flash takes a square shape. We also note that the self-timer button is silkscreened with a “+”, related to the name of the machine.
Finally a tripod screw
The small punch located at the level of the optics is a sensor that detects the color filters that can be screwed on the lens. It then adjusts the exposure according to the type of filter. These are delivered in a small pouch with the device. Red, orange, blue, with patterns … they add a little original touch to the images.
Finally, the main novelty is installed under the device. The Now + now has a tripod screw thread. An interesting contribution for those who want to try their hand more easily at the practice of light painting, for example. Few snapshots showcase this element and we welcome its arrival at Polaroid.
Un clone du Polaroid Now
Otherwise, apart from these few changes, Now + is almost identical to Now. It is slightly heavier (457 grams), but its size is similar. Also, for more details on the general ergonomics of the device, we refer you to the Polaroid Now test that we published a few months ago.
The real difference between Now and Now + is Bluetooth connectivity. Once the Polaroid app (available on iOS and Android) installed, pairing is almost instantaneous – to stay within the logic of the device. From the app, it is possible to know the battery life and the number of films available in the box.
A simple and efficient application
The application has hardly evolved since the OneStep + of 2018. There is a remote control, a double exposure mode, the “light painting”, or a manual mode, which allows you to modify all the parameters of exposure. Completely analog device requires, we have no liveview which would allow to have a direct feedback of what the device sees.
To these options already present for a few years, Polaroid has added an aperture priority mode, which is therefore only used to adjust the aperture of the optics. The largest aperture is f / 11, the smallest is f / 64. Finally, the latest novelty, the tripod mode modifies the exposure time according to the light conditions when the Now + is mounted on a fixed support.
The application is quite easy to learn and options such as light painting make it easy to obtain “good results”. That being said, getting a better picture with classic modes (aperture priority or manual mode) than with automatic mode is a challenge. Also, unless you are in full creative flare, we recommend that you trust the device.
Regarding image quality, nothing new. Polaroid uses the same films called i-Type in 79×79 mm format. For more details, we refer you to the Polaroid Go and Now tests.
It is a paper that offers a relative sharpness and a very vintage. An almost sepia tint that will not appeal to fans of natural-looking photos. It should also be remembered that it is preferable to let the flash go off automatically. Without the latter, the camera has difficulty maintaining a good exposure. Likewise, the Now + does better in low light and thus more “faithfully” reproduces a scene photographed during an evening in an apartment than outside in full sun.
Fashions to give free rein to your creativity
The different modes – we think in particular of the light painting – are particularly interesting for creating original effects. Thanks to piloting with the mobile application, it becomes easier to take creative shots.
Anyway, we recommend that you read the user manual of the device, which does not hesitate to give you many little tips that allow you to better understand the operation of the device.
